How ChatGPT actually finds local businesses
Most local business owners assume ChatGPT works like Google. It does not. ChatGPT's web search runs on the OpenAI-Microsoft partnership, which means it queries the Bing index when it looks up real-time information about local businesses. Google is not in that chain.
Three platforms feed that chain most directly:
- Bing Places. The free, verified business profile that feeds structured data directly into the Bing index. Your name, address, phone number, category, hours, and photos become a record Bing can serve to ChatGPT. A business with a complete Bing Places listing gives ChatGPT a structured, authoritative record to cite.
- Yelp. ChatGPT has a documented data partnership with Yelp. When ChatGPT answers local business queries, it can surface Yelp listings directly. Keeping your Yelp profile accurate and complete adds an independent confirmed record ChatGPT can draw from.
- Foursquare. A major location-data provider used across AI assistants, mapping platforms, and apps. The data Foursquare holds about your business appears in AI answers even if you have never actively managed a Foursquare listing.
The practical takeaway: your Google Business Profile matters for Google AI. Your Bing Places, Yelp, and Foursquare profiles matter for ChatGPT.
The gap is real (and open)
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index measured how many local business locations were being actively recommended by major AI assistants. The result: only 1.2% of locations were being named by ChatGPT (compared to 11% by Gemini and 7.4% by Perplexity).
That is not an argument for pessimism. Most local businesses have not yet taken the steps that move the number. The competitive ground in AI visibility has not been claimed in most categories and cities, and it is easier to stake out now than after everyone has figured it out.
The five concrete steps
These are the actions with the most direct line to ChatGPT citations, in priority order.
1. Claim and complete your Bing Places listing. Go to bingplaces.com, claim your business, and fill every field: name (exact match to your other profiles), address, phone number, category, hours, photos, and a short business description. This is free, takes about 15 minutes, and creates a direct record in the Bing index ChatGPT queries.
2. Make your NAP identical everywhere. Your business Name, Address, and Phone number must be exactly the same on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Foursquare, and Apple Maps. Same spelling, same suite number, same phone format. Inconsistency is the most common reason an AI cannot confirm a business is real and names a competitor instead.
3. Build your review count. Analyses of AI citation patterns suggest a rough floor around 150 genuine reviews before ChatGPT and Perplexity tend to surface businesses as named recommendations, regardless of how well-structured their pages are. That is a calibration point, not a guarantee. If your review count is well below that, review growth comes before schema work or content investment. Ask every satisfied customer, reply to every review, and never buy or fake them.
4. Write answer-first content. ChatGPT pulls from real pages when it answers questions in real time. Pages that open with a self-contained, quotable answer in the first 100 words are cited at measurably higher rates than pages that bury the answer in background. The Princeton GEO study *(KDD 2024)* found that adding quotations lifted how often a page was cited by around 41%, under the study's experimental conditions. Adding relevant statistics and citing credible sources moved the same needle in the same direction.
5. Keep your content current. A page that still lists last year's prices is a weaker answer to a question asked today, and an assistant that surfaces it can be contradicted by the first customer who checks. Keeping a page current is one of the few levers you fully control. A quarterly review of your key service pages, checking prices, service areas, and answers for accuracy, is a concrete cadence.
What you cannot control
Be clear-eyed about the limits.
- ChatGPT changes its behavior constantly. A citation today is not a citation next month.
- You cannot control the exact wording of an AI answer.
- You cannot force ChatGPT to name your business.
- Any vendor promising guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling something that does not exist.
What you can control is whether your business is the most confirmed, most documented, easiest-to-cite option in your category and city. That is the whole game, and it is the same game as regular SEO done well.
How this fits the broader picture
The steps above are a subset of the full AI search optimization playbook. The same NAP consistency, review count, answer-first content, and schema work that help with ChatGPT also help with Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity. There is no conflict between optimizing for one engine and another; the fundamentals compound across all of them.
